Ransomware attacks – Understanding “Ransomware” and the steps to stay secure

Ransomware attacks are a growing threat, holding businesses hostage by encrypting critical data and demanding payment for decryption. Here are some steps you, as a user, can take to stay secure.

What is Ransomware and how does it affect?

It's like a virtual burglar breaking in and throwing a digital padlock on all your files and folders. You can see all your files are still there, but you can't access them! The burglar (ransomware) demands a hefty sum of money in exchange for a key to unlock your files. That's essentially what ransomware does. Hackers gain access to your system, encrypt your data (making it unusable), and demand a ransom payment to unlock it.

The repercussions of such attacks can be devastating for both the organization and you. It can lead to permanent data loss, cripple day to day operations, damage our organization’s reputation.

In June 2024, Patelco Credit Union fell victim to a ransomware attack. Hackers gained access to their systems, blocked access, and demanded a ransom payment. This attack highlights the potential disruption ransomware can cause to essential services.

Just recently, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago was impacted by a ransomware attack affecting over 790,000 individuals. This case emphasizes how cybercriminals often use email phishing to gain initial access to systems. Phishing attempts remain a popular tactic for ransomware attackers globally.

How to Stay Secure:

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk of a ransomware attack:

Phishing Awareness: Phishing emails are a common method for delivering ransomware. Be cautious of suspicious emails and attachments. Never click on links or open attachments from unknown senders. Verify the sender's email address carefully and be wary of generic greetings or urgent requests even those claiming to be from senior team members. Be a phishing warrior!
Software Updates: Outdated software often contains security vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit. Ensure you regularly install updates for your operating system, apps, and web browsers. Most software will prompt you to update, but you can also check for updates manually.
Strong Passwords: Create strong, unique passwords for your work accounts. Avoid using personal information like birthdays or anniversaries in your passwords. Consider using a password manager to help you create and store complex passwords and never write down your passwords or store them in notepad or on desktop.
Store Data on OneDrive: Save all your important documents and files on your OneDrive. This ensures your work is backed up securely and minimizes the risk of data loss from a ransomware attack.
Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect a phishing attempt or notice any unusual activity on your work computer, report it to your beloved GL Tech team immediately.
